Fort Santiago is popular among locals here because it holds significant historical value being 437 years old and a silent witness to the journey and cry for freedom of the Filipino people -from pre-Spanish era to the Spanish colonization up to the American times, Japanese occupation (on which the fort was used as prison) and up to the present time.

Fort Santiago is the old local spot where the history of DR. JOSE RIZAL lies. There you can see the bottom detention cell where he was detained during his time.. you can also see some of his suits , books and personal things he used during his detentioned...Fort santiago is in the heart of intramuros as well as san agustine church and manila cathedral. as of now manila cathedral is prohibited to visited by due to instructural defect but outside you may take photo shot only you can't go or enter inside of the church.

The Fort santiago used to be the site of the kingdom of Rajah Suleiman, the Muslim king who ruled during the pre-Hispanic Manila. It was named after Spanish patron saint Santiago Matamoros (James, Slayer of the Moors). It was a main port for the Manila Galleon, a spice trade between Europe and the Americas that lasted for 333 years.

Plan your trip ahead of time. List what to do and what not to do. Just a tip, if you'd like to ride the 'Calesa' (a horse-drawn carriage). You can always haggle with the price. It's a per head rate basis and you can always bargain for a less expensive price for the tour inside the walled city. Or better yet walk and check out the finest details of Fort Santiago. :)
