Chinatown or Vietnamese we call it "Phố người Hoa". It's an interesting travel spot for foreigners. Actually, "Chinatown" is not only famous for Chợ Lớn market and Chinese temples, it's also unique for Chinese local business.

In China town, there is Triệu Quang Phục Scissors street where local Chinese sharpen knives and scissors for living. You can watch skillful craftsmen doing their job right on the pavements.

On Hải Thượng Lãn Ông street, very near scissors street, there are many Vietnamese herbal medicine stores. Actually, herbal is made by Vietnamese but Chinese are good at doing business so it looks like Chinese herbal but it's not...

On Lương Nhữ Học street or also known as unicorn street. Chinese sell many unicorn heads and customs providing for Unicorn dances. Especially on Tết trung thu or Mid-autumn festival , the street is full of local Vietnamese and Chinese come to buy lanterns. The street is very crowded and brighten with glittering colors. You can see many children watching and asking or even begging their parents to buy them beautiful hand-made lanterns or many modern Chinese-made electric lanterns!

^^
Travelers can take blue bus number 1 to go to China town. I recommend bus number 1 because it is kinda best bus in HCMC. There is also bus number 56. Green bus number 56 is more local. You can try bus number 56 but it would take long time to get to China town than bus number 1.
Good luck!

P/S: You may hear Chinese speaking Vietnamese and Chinese at the same time, very weird and funny, I think! And one thing you need to know that local Chinese living in China town are not very good at English.

distincted from the vietnamese dwelling, cholon belongs to chinese immigrants in hcmc, their main business is purchasing, distributing as there are abt 3 big wholesales markets in the area where you can find every thing with the bloody cheap price ever, I helped one Mexican buy 2 cone-hats with only $1.5 whilst they cost $2 ea in the center. Besides, cuisine and culture are noteworthy, If you haven't been to China or you miss chinese food, it will provide you a general picture of chinese specialty. Lastly, it brings such a great delight during some holidays in lunar calendar, this region is decorated beautifully with lights, lanterns, ancient houses.

Chinatownn is a place the Chinese live in. They have something's so... Chinese lol: Chinese herbs, Chinese foods, Chinese pagoda. The Chinese's culture is so close with our culture, but still have something atractive differences.
